The History of Lottusse: a long and sometimes difficult road

La historia de Lottusse

Since its foundation in 1877, Lottusse has come a long way. Along the road we have discovered new places, taken unexpected paths and we have even blazed new trails. Some of these have taken us very far. But most importantly, along our journey we have met new wanderers who have joined us, and so we have formed an authentic and great family. Yet, every road has its share of potholes. This is especially the case on journeys as long as the one travelled by Lottusse, which had to endure the particularly bumpy 20th century.

These obstacles have taken many forms, from economic crises to war. Each of them presented a unique challenge that Lottusse had to overcome by sharpening its wits and, above all, working hard and persistently. As the poet said, the road is made by walking. And we add, if the wanderer wants to go on walking, there will be a road.

But the path is not always clear. We have lived through economic crises like those of 1898, 1928 and 1973, two world wars and the Spanish Civil War, among many other challenges. And we do not have to look so far into the past, with the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. For long stretches of our journey, what lay on the horizon was grey and often threatening. But resolutely, we overcame it all, leaving the difficulties behind.

Lottusse through times of difficulty: effectiveness, humanity and trust

To overcome each of the crises that have marked our history, it was essential to reaffirm the conviction that without unity, everything is in vain. This lead us back to the metaphor of the road, which is so useful for us while also being true. When strength fails you, there is nothing better than a shoulder to lean on to be able to continue walking

This is exactly what we have always done at Lottusse each time the road ahead took an unexpected turn. Difficult times require leadership. But, as they say, to lead is to serve. And this is exactly the mindset we have adopted. We think of the company as a large family that we must care for before asking for sacrifice. Because only with the bonds of trust and loyalty is it possible to create a close community that allows us to continue on our journey.

However, customers and suppliers also comprise the human element, each of them with their own needs and concerns. Our strategy with them is to react quickly, especially in times of crisis, showing that, with our more than 140 years of history, Lottusse is a company to trust.

Effectiveness, in this regard, is one of the foundations of Lottusse. And, in times of crisis, effectiveness is synonymous with an instant response and, above all, pre-emptive action. This is something we at Lottusse have developed and refined thanks to the experience we have gained throughout our long history.

Lottusse, a company with a vocation to endure

We are convinced that this attitude has been the mainstay of our long journey through more than 140 years of history. And not for nothing. This vision has been inscribed in Lottusse since its early years. For instance, after the economic downturn that followed the loss of Cuba and the Philippines, our founder, Mestre Antoni, studied French every night for five years when he arrived home from gruelling days of work, so that he could expand the business to Paris. This intuitive and intelligent action shaped our historical roadmap in difficult times: the best strategy is to anticipate new opportunities, effort and sacrifice for others.

With the arrival of the second and third generation of families, the union, so characteristic of Lottusse, between the traditional and the modern, between the family and the business, between the local and the global, has remained a guiding light that illuminates the path forward. Today we are a consolidated and reputable brand in the handcrafted footwear industry. We have grown tirelessly, opening our own Lottusse stores, which have cleared the way and taken us to places as far afield as China.

The family continues. And with it, the legacy that is passed down from generation to generation, upholding those values that help us understand ourselves. And, as long as we know who we are, we will endure. That is precisely what has defined Lottusse and what encourages us to fight every day.
